Entering the final year of his current contract next summer, the former Liverpool winger wants to become one of the club’s best-paid players having joined from the Reds back in the summer of 2015, according to The Guardian.

The newspaper reports that there is no option for an extra 12 months and his value will plummet unless City can tie up a deal before July.

However, despite the clock ticking down, it is understood there is some distance between what the 23-year-old is requesting and what City are willing to offer.

Sterling scored 23 times last season as City romped to the Premier League title and is an important member of Pep Guardiola’s team.

On Friday City’s Spanish coach insisted: “It’s well-known we’re delighted with him and would like him to continue. My club knows my opinion and we share that. After that it is the club and the agent.”
