Gustavo Alfaro has only been in charge at Boca Junior for a matter of days but the former midfielder has already started showing his cards.

Boca’s brand new manager explained how young players might fare during his tenure and hinted at the style of play we’ll see from the Xeneize.

In the days following his rather exhaustive press conference, the new coach discussed his preferences on the pitch and in the locker room. Alfaro suggested that he’ll prioritize youth players from within the club’s structure over bringing in reinforcements from the transfer market.

“At Boca, you can open the closet and find clothes for any occasion. There are times when the match will require you to have possession, others that will ask you for pressure. There are times when the match will force you to play vertical, there are circumstances in which counter-attacking is a way to search as well.”

“And so there are various circumstances and situations. The virtue of this squad has to be adapted to the things the game requires,” the former Atlético de Rafaela captain said.

In the next breath, the 56-year-old manager stressed that he wants to oversee “a team that identifies with the history” of Boca Juniors.

“It is a team that has to be willing to be dressed according to what the occasion calls for. For that we must have a sense of belonging and have the conceptual clarity to know how to answer what each match requires in each case.”

Tapping into the impressive development schema at the giant Buenos Aires club, Alfaro publicly supported Boca’s homegrown talent.

“All other things being equal, the player from this club plays. An outside player or reinforcement has to show a marked difference in category in that respect, because the player trained in our institution has already grown up nurtured by the roots and by the DNA of this club.”
