Manchester United reportedly failed in a late attempt to steal Julian Brandt from under the noses of Borussia Dortmund.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Brandt had joined the Bundesliga runners-up from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth €25m.

But a story in the Manchester Evening News has confirmed that Ed Woodward made an approach to sign the Germany international over the weekend, only to be told that he had already agreed terms with Dortmund.

With Alexis Sánchez almost certainly leaving the club after 18 months United have been on the hunt for a pacy wide player this summer.

Jadon Sancho was thought to be their prime target, but with no Champions League football, the English youngster has opted to stay in Germany.

Brandt was believed to be their second choice but his move to Dortmund has meant that the Old Trafford outfit will now make a move to sign Swansea youngster Daniel James.
