A former Tottenham Hotspur star believes Manchester United are “nailed on” to sign Danny Rose this summer, while other reports suggest another player could be going the other way.

Rose has fallen out of favour with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino this season and is widely expected to leave the club when the transfer window re-opens, with Old Trafford touted as his most likely next destination.

And Jermaine Jenas – who spent eight years at White Hart Lane between 2005 and 2013 – believes if Rose does go to United, the Lilywhites should ask for Luke Shaw in return.

“I want an overlapping left back, like an Ashley Cole or what Danny Rose brought to Spurs last season,” Jenas told GQ magazine.

“I think it’s nailed on that [José] Mourinho will get Rose this summer and the smart deal would be for Luke Shaw to go in the opposite direction.

“To me, everyone wins from that deal and although it’s hard to leave the biggest club in the country, Spurs are so exciting at the moment that it would revive Shaw’s career.

“If Danny Rose has a good World Cup, I would expect Daniel Levy to value him in a similar way to Kyle Walker. I think he will bring out the ’50 million’ number.”

And according to The Sun, Shaw isn’t the only United player who could be wending his way to north London this summer.

With Michel Vorm expected to return to the Netherlands at the end of the season, Spurs are in the market for a new goalkeeper and The Sun claim Red Devils’ stopper Sam Johnstone has been identified as a potential target.

Johnstone is yet to make a senior appearance for United but has spent the last 18 months on loan at Aston Villa, where he has performed an integral role in the Championship side’s promotion push.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and could therefore be available on a free transfer, with a number of Premier League clubs understood to be keeping tabs on him.

Spurs are up against United at Wembley in Saturday evening’s FA Cup semi-final.
