After winning the first ever English domestic treble in 2018/19, it seems Manchester City aren’t planning a drastic overhaul of their squad this summer.

The Blues signed just one player – Riyad Mahrez – in the entirety of last season and according to a report from the Manchester Evening News on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola is hoping to make just two new additions to his squad before the start of the new campaign.

City have been heavily linked with Portuguese duo Bruno Fernandes and João Félix but according to the MEN, the Premier League champions aren’t actually going to be in the market for any new attacking players this summer.

That could change if Leroy Sané is sold to Bayern Munich, but it seems Guardiola believes he already has enough firepower at his disposal and is expecting Mahrez and Phil Foden to play more prominent roles in the team next season.

The two areas which Guardiola does hope to address are midfield and central defence.

Fernandinho turned 34 last month and City will try to bring in a defensive midfield understudy for the Brazilian, with 22-year-old Atlético Madrid man Rodri being their prime target as things stand.

If they can’t get the Spaniard – who has a £62m release clause but seems to be unsure whether he wants to leave Atlético – City could reportedly turn their attention to Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele or Real Madrid’s Marcos Llorente.

They’re also going to need a new centre-back to replace departing captain Vincent Kompany and recent reports suggest they will compete with Manchester United for the signature of Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire, who could cost as much as £90m.

But the MEN believe there is now a chance Nicolás Otamendi will stay at the Etihad Stadium and with 18-year-old Eric Garcia and 22-year-old Philippe Sandler expected to be given more first-team responsibility next term, City are unlikely to need more than one new centre-half.

They may also go in for a new right-back if Danilo decides he wants to leave and recent reports have linked them with Juventus’s João Cancelo and Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

But despite rumours towards the end of the season suggesting Leicester’s Ben Chilwell was a prime target, Guardiola is reportedly happy to go into the new season with Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko as his two options at left-back.
