Manchester City have emerged as a surprise suitor for Atlético Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer but Atlético’s transfer ban meant the Frenchman eventually opted to stay in the Spanish capital out of loyalty to his current employer.

But the 26-year-old – who reportedly has a £180 million release clause – could decide to move on once Diego Costa returns to Atleti in January and according to Catalan outlet Sport, Pep Guardiola is keen to bring him to the Etihad.

City are likely to face stiff competition for Griezmann’s signature, however. Rivals United are still very interested in the player who has scored just three times in 13 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side this season, while Barcelona could also make a move should their attempt to sign Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho fail to bear fruit.

Bayern Munich would apparently also be interested in bringing Griezmann to the Bundesliga, although doing so would mean the German giants would have to break their transfer record several times over.

Griezmann – who is under contract until 2022 – is likely to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano for the rest of the season at least, but Atlético could drop their asking price to as little as £90 million in the summer.
