Following the departure of Wayne Rooney, Major League Soccer’s D.C. United has their sights set on another marquee signing.

According to The Athletic, 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modrić has been in talks with the American club since the conclusion of the 2019 season and is reportedly ‘excited’ by the prospect of moving to the United States.

Though the Athletic reports that a potential switch could happen as soon as this coming summer, AS is reporting that D.C. United will not be able to afford his salary at the current time.

In addition, the Spanish outlet believes that Modrić wants to see out his Real Madrid deal, which runs until summer 2021. Modrić would be nearly 36 years old.

Despite no longer being a guaranteed starter, the Croatia international has scored four goals and contributed five assists in 18 games in all competitions.
