Despite currently being all the way down in 17th place, Chivas are very much mathematically alive in the Liguilla race.

Chivas have taken just 12 points from as many games this season but find themselves just six points behind eighth-placed Pumas with eight matches remaining in the 2019 Apertura.

Though the objective right now would seem to be avoiding relegation at the end of the 2020 Clausura, Chivas boss Luis Fernando Tena insisted that his side’s focus is to qualify for the Liguilla.

“We are going to fight until the end to get ourselves back in the Liguilla conversation,” Tena told reporters on Tuesday.

“We are aware that we are lagging behind and it will be difficult. As long as there is mathematical hope, we will think about the Liguilla.

“We will also think about playing well and leaving everything on the pitch whether we have a chance or not.

“Today, we think about going to Monterrey, winning, and continuing on with a better possibility of qualifying.”

Chivas have a very favourable schedule, as four of their final six games of the season come against teams in the bottom six.
