Louis Van Gaal believes moving Frenkie de Jong to centre-back would improve Barcelona’s defence.
The Blaugrana are still reeling after the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clásico.
That defeat means Barça have dropped to second in the LaLiga table, one point behind Real.
De Jong has yet to produce the sort of form that convinced the Catalans to pay €75m for him from Ajax.
The Dutch international only has two goals and two assists since his move to the Camp Nou.
Former Barcelona manager Van Gaal believes that current head coach Quique Setién may be using him in the wrong position.
“De Jong could play in defence,” the Dutchman said to Ziggo Sport.
“He has the speed and insight to defend the strikers at the right times.
“I’m not the Barcelona coach anymore, but I think Rakitic and Arthur can play in the midfield at the same time.
“Barça could improve their defence by playing De Jong there.”
Van Gaal led Barcelona to two LaLiga titles between 1997 and 1999.
