Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus believes Bayer Leverkusen winger Kai Havertz is going to be one of Germany’s brightest talents for a long, long time.

When asked if Bayern should make a play for the 20-year-old, Matthäus had no doubt and even said he has the potential to be a Ballon d’Or winner.

“If they have a chance, in any case, but there will be big international competition.

“Kai Havertz has set the bar very high. He set the bar very high, for me he was the player of the season.

“If Havertz can maintain that high level, with that ease, cleverness, presence on the pitch and goal scoring, he could eventually become my successor as a world footballer of the year.”

Though it’s now expected Havertz will remain at Leverkusen for the upcoming season, Matthäus says he’ll have to leave in order to achieve his potential.

“He can play in the Champions League, and then he will probably make the move to a very big club.

“He has shown what he is capable of.”
