After a busy summer schedule, Premier League clubs are still working their way back to full fitness and on Wednesday, Liverpool players who didn’t start Sunday’s 4-0 victory over West Ham were afforded a sixty-minute 11 v 11 training match against each other.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who enjoyed a memorable pre-season debut with a stunning bicycle kick against Manchester United and came off the bench against the Hammers, started at Melwood and opened the scoring for the ‘hosts’ wearing the home strip.

Joël Matip, returning from a muscle injury, managed to complete the entire hour alongside young centre-back Nat Phillips.

Another player who has put his fitness problems behind him is Daniel Sturridge. The striker found the net as a substitute at Anfield over the weekend following a steady pre-season programme and scored from the spot in this warm-up.

Dominic Solanke, meanwhile, got a brace while Adam Lallana was also on the scoresheet as the ‘home’ Reds side, which also included captain Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alberto Moreno and Nathaniel Clyne, claimed a 5-0 victory infront of the watching Jürgen Klopp and Neil Critchley.

The players who started against West Ham trained in a separate workout.
