Though Liverpool’s U-23s were suffering from a number of injuries, fans could not have expected what happened at Melwood on Wednesday night.

Liverpool were soundly beaten 7-0 in front of their own supporters by the Villarreal U-23s, as the Reds were hampered without the services of captain Matty Virtue, Nat Phillips, Bobby Adekanye, and notably Rafael Camacho – who has been on the brink of a first-team place.

It was disaster for the Reds from the beginning as they gave up four goals within the first 25 minutes.

Mario González scored just four minutes in, with team-mate Sergio Lozano doubling the lead just two minutes later.

González completed his brace in the 15th minute while Nikola Vujnović made it a four-goal advantage 10 minutes later.

Whatever team talk Neil Critchley gave at half-time had no effect as Villarreal scored three more goals to set the tone in Group E of the Premier League International Cup.

Vujnović completed his brace, while Adrián Torrecillas and Mukwelle Akale also added to the rout.

Villarreal has seven points through three games after they drew Swansea and defeated both Liverpool and West Brom.

Liverpool, WBA, and Swansea have yet to face one another in the competition.

Liverpool’s U-23s are currently in eighth place in the 12-team Premier League 2 Division 1.
