Bayer Leverkusen manager Heiko Herrlich has been fined €12,000 for his sideline dive during their DVB Pokal clash against Mönchengladbach in December.

We thought these theatrics do not happen any more, at least amongst respected players, but nobody said anything about coaches. Give this guy an Oscar already.

“It certainly looked stupid, but it was absolutely no intention, the ball came up to me, I let it through my legs so Gladbach can not intervene quickly, I did not need to do that,” Herrlich explained.

“That was nonsense, then Zakaria touched me easy, I’m sliding away, that’s what happened in the affect, so I have to stop with my 46 years, of course.”

The incident happened in the 75th minute of Leverkusen’s 1-0 win over Gladbach, when Herrlich was involved with Denis Zakaria. Following the final whistle he apologised for his behaviour but the DFB did not think that was enough.

“I accept the punishment,” says Herrlich. “If you sign a contract, you automatically agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the German Football Association.

“To the mockery and mockery that I got along after the scene, I have to pay the penalty now.”
