Borussia Dortmund new boy Leonardo Balerdi has suffered a cut in his mouth that will keep him out of the final stage of the 2019 U-20 South American Championship.

The AFA reported in the player’s medical report that Balerdi himself was disaffected because of injuries in the oral cavity caused in the game against Uruguay.

However, the injury is severe enough to prevent him from performing any sort of physical activity that involves contact.

The Uruguay match was the only match during the U-20 South American Championship that Balerdi was involved in.

Balerdi will now return to Borussia Dortmund as a result of the untimely injury.

Dortmund just purchased the centre-back from Boca Juniors for €15m earlier this month.

After not tasting victory against Paraguay and Ecuador, Argentina pulled out 1-0 victories against Uruguay and Peru to advance to the final stage of the tournament.

The top four teams from the final six-team stage will advance to the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.

The top three teams will also qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games.
