Leon Goretzka’s agent has revealed the reason why his client decided to sign for Bayern Munich over extended his stay at Schalke.

The 22-year-old agreed a deal to join the Bundesliga champions last week, with the midfielder set to stay at the Veltins Arena until the end of the season before then teaming up with the Bayern squad.

Schalke fans booed the Germany international during their game against Hanover at the weekend.

But Goretzka’s representative has insisted that now is the “right time” to join the Bavarian giants.

“Back in the days when he still played for Bochum he was already good enough to go to Munich, Dortmund or anywhere else in Europe, but he didn’t, cause it would have been the wrong move for his career,” Jörg Neubauer told the Immerhertha podcast.

“He then choose to play for Schalke for five years, became a regular for Germany and now its time to take the next step.

“[Bayern] made a great effort to sign him. That didn’t exist at Schalke.”
