The Bayern Munich midfielder was deployed in an unfamiliar left-back position in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Augsburg and afterwards, he admitted he wasn’t best pleased with how he’d played.
“I was certainly not satisfied,” the 23-year-old told reporters.
“I think it was clear from the outset that I would not be like David Alaba and put one cross after the other in the box and I wanted to do a good job defensively.
“You do not have any automatic mechanisms to fall back on, so you think more about it, which was certainly not a good game for me.”
Goretzka was booked in the first half before he was taken off at half-time and replaced by regular left-back Alaba.
But the former Schalke man insists he was substituted due to an injury rather than it being a technical decision.
“In that action I got a yellow card, which was justified, then I twisted my ankle,” he said.
“That’s why I couldn´t carry on.”
