Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was an integral part of the England U-20 squad that won the 2017 U-20 World Cup in South Korea.

However, despite being with the club since 2013, the 21-year-old has made just a single first-team appearance with Newcastle – a 3-1 FA Cup win over Luton Town back in January.

Woodman is currently third on Rafa Benítez’s depth chart, behind both Martin Dúbravka and Karl Darlow, and is looking at all of his options as he looks to progress his career.

The young starlet wanted to go out on loan this summer, but Newcastle wanted to sign him to a new deal first.

Woodman and Newcastle are now in a stalemate and with his contract expiring in 2020, he’s desperate to get more first-team experience after loan spells with Crawley, Kilmarnock, and Aberdeen.

Leeds and Celtic could come to his rescue, as they’ve both been reportedly monitoring his situation.

Leeds have already declared they will sign a goalkeeper in January after on-loan goalkeeper Jamal Blackman returned to Chelsea due to a broken tibia.

Celtic’s starting goalkeeper Craig Gordon will be 36 years old at the turn of the new year and speculation over his retirement has begun.

Gordon had an injury-ravaged career at Sunderland and there are concerns over his long-term future.

“I want to get the best out of a bad situation,” Woodman said. “January is around the corner and I have to be prepared for it when it comes.

“I’ve always said I enjoy playing football so whatever level it is, I am going to enjoy it.”
