Summer signing Patrick Bamford found the net as Leeds defeated fellow Championship side Bolton at Elland Road to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The former Chelsea attacker, who joined from Middlesbrough, scored the opener on 27 minutes before Samuel Saiz doubled the advantage before half-time. Erhun Otzumer pulled one back for the visitors but Marcelo Bielsa’s men held on.

Aston Villa joined the Whites in the next round as they defeated League Two Yeovil Town 1-0 at Huish Park courtesy of Conor Hourihane’s 77th minute goal.

Last season’s semi-finalists Bristol City were the victim of a giant-killing as League One Plymouth claimed a 1-0 victory at Ashton Gate.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, needed penalties to get the better of Kevin Nolan’s Notts County at the Riverside while Nottingham Forest also required a shootout to beat Bury with both goalkeepers even stepping up. It was goals galore at Mansfield as they hammered League Two champions Accrington Stanley 6-1.

Fleetwood, managed by Joey Barton, won their first League Cup tie in history with a shootout victory over Crewe.

On Thursday, League One side Sunderland host Championship Sheffield Wednesday.
