The club is expected to formally announce the signing on Thursday.

The MASL currently has 17 teams across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The league also has an MASL2 division that began play last year.

Donovan, who has lived in San Diego the last few years and has also been trying to land an MLS franchise in the city, is the all-time goals and assists leader in both Major League Soccer and the United States national team – tied with Clint Dempsey with 57 international goals.

The 36-year-old had come out of retirement in 2016 to re-join the Los Angeles Galaxy. Last year, he got the itch again and played with Liga MX side Club León for the 2018 Clausura season.

Canada and MLS legend Dwayne De Rosario is also in the MASL, currently plying his trade with the Mississauga MetroStars.
