LaLiga president Javier Tebas could be in the running to take over as chief executive of the Premier League.

According to the Times, Tebas is now being considered a contender for the role vacated by Richard Scudamore last year.

Tebas has been in charge of LaLiga since 2013.

The 56-year-old made headlines early this season as he pushed for games to be played abroad.

Tebas struck a 15-year deal with Relevent to host LaLiga games in North America. Relevent are the company behind the International Champions Cup, a worldwide pre-season tournament featuring Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, the Spaniard’s plans hit a roadblock when the Spanish FA and a majority of LaLiga clubs refused to go along with the project.

Financially speaking, LaLiga has thrived under Tebas. The league brings in more television revenue than any of Europe’s other major leagues, bar the Premier League.

However, the Spaniard is a controversial figure and has introduced fines for clubs who fail to fill their stadium and have empty seats shown on TV.

Fans in Spain have also criticised kick-off times, protesting against early matches and Monday night fixtures.

The Times report says Tebas rejected an approach to run Italy’s Serie A last year and has since seen his pay in crease to around £1million-a-year.

Much more money would be on offer in England, where Scudamore earned £2.6million as chief executive last season.

Susanna Dinnage, president of Discovery’s Animal Planet, had been appointed as Scudamore’s replacement in November but later decided against taking the role.
