Klopp wants Liverpool to improve despite best Premier League start

Jürgen Klopp believes Liverpool must do better if they are to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Klopp’s side are still unbeaten and have taken 30 points from their first 12 league matches – their best start to a campaign since the Premier League began in 1992.

But they went into the international break two points behind league leaders Manchester City and Klopp feels they need to step things up a gear if they’re going to keep pace with the reigning champions.

“We can improve. We have to and we will,” said Klopp at a gala dinner in support of the LFC Foundation.

“But between our best football and now, we have to win football games. That’s how it is and that’s what we’ve done already.”

The Reds have come on leaps and bounds since last season, however, when, at the same stage, they were fifth in the table having already lost two games.

“There’s absolutely no reason for criticising the boys, they do a really good job,” added Klopp.

“So many things are better than last year: defending is better, set-pieces are better; we are much more mature in games, game management is better. So many things are better.”

Liverpool’s league form hasn’t quite translated to the Champions League, however, and having been beaten by both Napoli and Red Star Belgrade this season, they face a crunch clash against Paris Saint-Germain next week.

“There were two days we were really not good, that’s true,” Klopp said.

“But a very intense period is coming up now. There has been a lot of improvement so far and there is still space for further improvement.”
