On Monday, a pair of saves from Kasper Schmeichel allowed Denmark to book their place in Euro 2020 as they drew Ireland 1-1 in the tenth and final match of qualifying.
Denmark are now 34 matches unbeaten, one short of tying the all-time record, last suffering defeat against Poland in October 2016.
The match marked Schmeichel’s 53rd cap and the Dane has admitted that he felt ignored by the federation after not making his international bow until he was 26.
“I felt I was overlooked,” BT report him saying to Kanal 5.
“The feeling of not getting the chance when I was younger, while I myself felt I had the level to be involved, and the feeling of being overlooked still lies deep within me.”
“There is not a single player out there for the money. It is such an uncomfortable claim, and especially when it means so much, and you spend so much time on it.”
Schmeichel has since cemented his legacy by winning the unlikeliest of Premier League titles and putting on a stellar display at last summer’s World Cup in Russia.
At age 33, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever be able to break his father’s (Peter) Danish record of 129 caps.
