Did West Ham clinch a deadline day bargain with Lucas Pérez?
The Spanish forward joined from Arsenal in a deal worth around €5m on Thursday.
Lucas had struggled to make a mark at the Emirates Stadium after joining the club in August 2016 and spent the 2017/18 season back on loan with former club Deportivo La Coruña. On the face of it, the season was a trying one: Lucas scored eight goals and recorded six assists in 35 LaLiga appearances as Deportivo were relegated.
But dig a little deeper and there are some impressive numbers.
In terms of chances created, Lionel Messi was the only player in LaLiga to outdo Lucas’ tally of 79 last season.
Lucas Pérez created 79 chances in LaLiga in 2017/18; Lionel Messi (87) was the only player in the league to create more.

So he created more chances than any Real Madrid player, any Atlético Madrid player, every Barcelona player other than Messi and every other player in Spain’s top flight as well. All for a team that suffered relegation.
Lucas caps an impressive summer from West Ham, with the club also bringing in Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko to strengthen their attack.
