Even though all signs point to this year’s Club World Cup final being a re-match of the 1981 Intercontinental Cup final where Flamengo upset Liverpool 3-0, Jürgen Klopp has not looked that far ahead.
In a recent interview with ESPN Brasil, Klopp admitted that he knows very little about his potential foes in Qatar.
“I know they’ve won the Copa Libertadores and I know a couple of players, obviously.
“But, I have about the same knowledge as we usually have before we play a team in the Champions League for the first time. So that’s three, four days before we play them.”
“We have a [semi-final] in between, and it must be enough to prepare for the game. So at this moment, it would be a shame if I’d know much more about any Brazilian team than I know about Bournemouth.
“I [had] to prepare for Bournemouth on the weekend, that [was] my priority. And then, as I said, we’ll be prepared. That should be enough.
“We respect them a lot, but we’re not sure we’ll play them, because both have to win the semi-final. And at this moment, I don’t know who we’ll play there, so let’s see.”
Liverpool will first have to play the winner of Rayados and either Al-Sadd or Hienghène Sport in the CWC semi-finals.
The opening match between the Qatari and the New Caledonian sides will take place on Wednesday.
