José Mourinho was in attendance when Belgium beat Iceland on Friday night and according to new reports he wasn’t there just to watch Toby Alderweireld.

Manchester United will surely be in the market for a new central defender when the transfer window reopens in January and over the weekend, Belgian website Voetball Krant reported that Mourinho had personally travelled to Brussels to watch the Spurs defender represent his country.

But while that may well have been the case, a conflicting report from Het Laatste Nieuws – another Belgian publication – claims the Red Devils boss was actually there to watch Axel Witsel.

Witsel has been in outstanding form since he moved to Borussia Dortmund from Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian in the summer and in hindsight, it’s surprising that nobody else seemed to be in for him at the time.

The 29-year-old would improve almost any side in Europe and though United are pretty well stocked when it comes to midfielders, it makes sense that they would be interested in bringing the former Zenit St Petersburg man to Old Trafford.

However, it’s difficult to imagine that Dortmund would be willing to part company with one of their best players just six months after signing him, and the man himself seems to be loving life at the Westfalenstadion.

“Switching to BVB was the best career decision I’ve ever made,” Witsel told German outlet Bild last week.

“I have never played with better players than here.

“Besides, the location is ideal. My family and I are now in close proximity to our homeland.”
