In just a little over five months at Flamengo, manager Jorge Jesus has become a bonafide legend of the club.
The 65-year-old Jesus, of course, won both the Copa Libertadores and the Brasileirão titles over the weekend – something that remarkably no Brazilian team had done since the 1963 Santos side led by Pelé.
Now Flamengo will try to replicate what that Santos team managed to do against AC Milan and win the Club World Cup.
A dream re-match of the 1981 final against Liverpool appears very likely, with Zico’s Flamengo famously having won 3-0 in Tokyo behind a brace Nunes and fellow Brazil international Adílio.
After his stunning success, Jorge Jesus has been linked with the Everton job should Marco Silva get the sack next month.
However, the former Sporting and Benfica manager sounds extremely happy in Brazil and sounded off on his love for Flamengo.
“I have never had a relationship as strong as I have with the Flamengo team,” Jesus said after his team’s dominating 4-1 win over Ceará on Wednesday night.
“I have been a manager for 38 years and found a group that loves me. I have never had a group so strong and confident in me and my ideas.”
In Qatar, Flamengo will first have to get past either Al-Hilal or Esperance of Tunisia to reach the final.
