Jonjo Shelvey has urged Newcastle to offer him a new contract to extend his stay with the Premier League club.

The 27-year-old’s contract runs out in 2021, but the midfielder wants to commit himself to the Magpies for the prime years of his career.

The Chronicle reports that Shelvey told the club programme that his family is settled in the North East and would like to stay put.

“At the end of the day, I’m playing for a new contract now,” he said.

“I want to stay here, and hopefully a contract will be sorted.

“The kids love it up here – they’ve got their friends here.”

Shelvey moved to Newcastle from Swansea in January 2016. He stuck with the Toon through relegation to and their subsequent promotion from the Championship.

While not always flavour of the month on Tyneside, Shelvey was recently handed the captain’s armband in place of the injured Jamaal Lascelles.

And his wonderful strike to secure a 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Saturday will only have served to win over even more of the St James’ Park faithful.
