Coming off the back of the best season of his career, Jesse Lingard has every reason to be excited for the World Cup.

The Manchester United forward has become a regular at Old Trafford, helping him to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s international setup.

Heading into the summer, Lingard is ready to add to his 10 England caps, possibly with a deeper role than he’s used to.

That won’t faze him one bit.

“Obviously playing regularly in the England team now I feel comfortable,” said the 25-year-old as he prepared to face Nigeria on Saturday.

“The season I have had at Man United, José (Mourinho) has given me the opportunity to play week in, week out so it was up to me to deliver those performances.”

Lingard certainly did deliver, with 13 goals in all competitions.

His performances and his diligence have left him battling with Dele Alli for a place in the England team. The pre-tournament friendlies may well determine who gets the nod but there’s little doubt Lingard is now feeling at home in the England setup.

“I’m playing comfortably with both United and England. This England team is a tight-knit group. We just have to focus on our football, we have a big tournament coming up so our heads our firmly on that at the moment.”

Some players burst onto the scene as late bloomers, others are late developers who quietly sneak up on you.

In Lingard, United and England appear to have the latter on their hands.
