Since arriving from Athletic Bilbao for €40m in 2012, Javi Martinez has won a Bundesliga every year and has been one of Bayern’s most important players.
However, according to a report from German outlet TZ, his time with the German giants may be coming to an end soon.
With Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich enjoying much success as a double pivot, Niko Kovač has demoted Martinez to the second team.
The report states: “The air at Bayern Munich may now be getting thinner for Javi Martinez.
“The Rekordmeister’s last few games have made this trend obvious. After Niko Kovač replaced the Spaniard in the double pivot with Leon Goretzka alongside Joshua Kimmich, the coach has appeared much more satisfied.
“Kovač has said that Kimmich and Goretzka ‘complement each other well’.”
Should Kimmich permanently move from right-back to defensive midfield, the position could become extremely crowded.
Bayern already have both Renato Sanches and Thiago and are rumoured to be in the running for Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong.
With Martinez on the books until 2021, selling the 30-year-old may just be Bayern’s best option.
