James Rodríguez wants to leave Bayern Munich and return to Real Madrid at the end of the season, according to reports in Spain.

James joined Bayern on a two-year loan from Madrid in the summer of 2017, and the Bundesliga giants have the option to purchase him permanently for €35m next summer.

However, after a successful first season in Bavaria, the Colombian has struggled for form under Niko Kovač this term, and is currently recuperating from an ankle ligament injury in Madrid.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the 27-year-old has decided he wants to leave Germany at the end of the season and return to the Spanish capital permanently.

Whether Los Blancos want him back remains to be seen, however. James moved to the Bernabéu from Monaco in the wake of his performances at the 2014 World Cup but his three seasons in LaLiga were rather underwhelming and he struggled to nail down a starting spot towards the end of his time at the club.

He is still under contract at Madrid until June 2021 but if he does go back, he would likely have to compete with the likes of Isco and Marco Asensio for a place in the team, and it could be argued that both players are better than him, on current form at least.

But wherever he’s playing next season, it looks like it won’t be Bayern Munich.
