Sunderland boss Jack Ross has noticed an improvement from Charlie Wyke this season.
Wyke scored the Black Cats’ winner against Rochdale on Tuesday and his manager didn’t hesitate to lavish praise on the striker.
“There has been a marked difference in him this season,” the Scot told Chronicle Live after the game.
“He had a slight ankle injury in pre-season but he has done the vast majority of the hard work and he has looked better for it, leaner and stronger.
“He looks a different player this season and that will be a massive asset for us.
“He has looked really lively in his two substitute appearances and I thought he was really good again today.
“His finish reflected a player who feels good about himself just now.
“Charlie is a proven goalscorer at this level.”
Wyke netted 22 times in 56 League One appearances during a two-year stint at Bradford but struggled at Sunderland last season.
After only finding the back of the net twice last season, Wyke is now off the mark for 2019/20 and his manager will be hoping to see more of the same.
