Jack Ross was forced to explain himself for making a pair of changes ahead of Sunderland’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Rotherham on Tuesday.

Conor McLaughlin and Dylan McGeouch came in for Chris Maguire and Grant Leadbitter but it was not enough to take the Black Cats up to third in the League One table.

“Chris had missed the Peterborough game with an ankle injury and was very much touch and go for Accrington and I thought long and hard about playing him because he has had some issues in training,” said Ross.

“Bringing in Dylan for Grant was really just to freshen it up in that area of the pitch.

“We had a quick turnaround between Saturday and Tuesday, but also we wanted to play a bit differently tonight – Marc [McNulty’s] goal was an example of that.

“I don’t think Rotherham would have expected it given how we normally play at home, so having Luke [O’Nien] playing in that [number 10] position helped us do that and it is good that we have that flexibility to do that at times.”

In other news, teenage Chad international striker and former Rennes academy product Haroun Tchaouna has claimed that Sunderland have offered him a trial at the club.

Tchaouna, who most recently played for Serie D side Caravaggio, is first waiting on the results of his previous trial at Ligue 1 side Angers before he would consider joining the Black Cats.
