Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu said Ivan Rakitić will have to wait until next season for a raise.

Bartomeu, speaking on the Onda Cero radio show earlier in the week, said it wouldn’t be possible to give the Croatian a pay rise until next year.

“This season we will not be able to make the gesture that Rakitić is asking of us,” he said. “Next season we can look at it in relation to new revenue.”

After Barcelona’s 4-0 triumph over PSV Eindhoven, Rakitić responded to Bartomeu’s comments on beIN SPORTS and dismissed any transfer speculation.

“I don’t want to ask for anything,” said Rakitić. “The only thing I want is to make the fans happy with me. I decided to stay here because I am happy.

“If I tell you the truth, what happens will happen and from my side, nothing changes.

“I know that words don’t mean that much in football in general, what is important is how we are on the pitch.

“I’m very happy. My family and I like it here and that’s the most important thing for me.”
