Newcastle United appear to have won the race to sign Islam Slimani on loan from Leicester City.

Slimani has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Monaco, Chelsea and West Ham United this month but now looks set to move to St James’ Park on loan until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old Algerian international striker joined Leicester from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £27.45 million.

However, his time at the King Power Stadium has been somewhat underwhelming, with just 13 goals from 46 appearances to his name.

Having failed in their attempts to sign Daniel Sturridge and Nicolai Jørgensen earlier this week, Slimani is poised to become the Magpies’ second signing of the month following the arrival of Kenedy on loan from Chelsea.

And Rafael Benítez will be hoping their business isn’t done there, with talks for Sparta Prague goalkepper Martin Dúbravka and Red Star Belgrade forward Richmond Boakye reportedly ongoing.

Meanwhile, Aleksandar Mitrović looks likely to leave the club on loan, with Bordeaux and Anderlecht touted as possible destinations for the Serbian.
