David Beckham’s MLS side Inter Miami FC made a huge splash in the transfer market by signing Rodolfo Pizarro from Monterrey and making him their second of three Designated Players (Matias Pellegrini).

Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough, who was also the man behind Atlanta United’s spectacular entry into the MLS, is using the same recipe that proved to be successful: bring in top Central and South American talent to play alongside MLS veterans.

Frozen out América forward Roger Martínez had been rumoured, along with a number of high-profile stars, to be Inter Miami’s third DP, but that will not be happening.

“Roger Martínez is someone we spoke to Club América about,” McDonough said. “It’s proved to be very difficult, no secret about that.

“If it is something that could’ve gotten done, Roger Martínez is someone that would have interested me to bring to the club.

“With his age (25) and price, that would have fit into my DP strategy.”

Inter Miami have filled 28 of their 30 roster spots and their transfer window remains open until 7 May. McDonough says they are still on the search for a two-way midfielder and a number nine.

Meanwhile, Martínez will continue to train with Miguel Herrera’s side but will not put on the América shirt ever again.
