İlkay Gündoğan was at the heart of Manchester City’s come-back victory over Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Burnley struck in the first-half but a quick-fire brace from Sergio Agüero gave City the lead and they went on to win by a comfortable 4-1 margin.

But it was Gündoğan’s quick thinking and precision that provided Agüero with both of his chances.

The first came via a free-kick, with the German midfielder catching Burnley napping to feed his team-mate into space.

“It was a free-kick and the referee didn’t tell me to wait,” Gündoğan explained. “I had some eye contact with Sergio. I know that he likes to use these kinds of situations to play quick.

“As soon as we had the contact I was sure he was going to make the run, so I just had to play the pass. Fortunately it was allowed and I think it was also correct. We just reacted quicker than our opponents.”

If the first was a bit of a trick, Gündoğan puts the second down to pure timing.

“The timing was just perfect,” he said said of the move, a beautiful one-two around the edge of the box.

“Sergio passed the ball to me and I just had to save it. I was waiting for the run and Sergio was just at the right time in the right spot. I was quite sure this ball was going through.”

The Gündoğan—Agüero connection is not something City fans have seen too often in the past but no one will complain if it produces goals that are both sexy and important, like the two against Burnley.
