How Real Madrid pocketed €12.5m from Atlético's latest transfer

Real Madrid made a tidy profit of €12.5m thanks to their rivals Atlético this week.

Atleti confirmed the €25m capture of Mario Hermoso on Thursday, signing the defender from Espanyol.

However, Real Madrid actually owned 50% of the rights to the transfer.

Though he never featured for the first team, Hermoso joined Real Madrid way back in 2005 and only left the club two years ago.

When he left the Bernabéu, though, Madrid retained 50% of his rights.

This summer Los Blancos were given a choice – either agree to the deal that would see him join Atlético, or sign him themselves for just €7.5m.

They chose the former, allowing the transfer to take place and pocketing a healthy profit on a player who never even played a first team game for them.
