Harry Winks has featured in nearly every match for Tottenham this season and some say he has the potential to be one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.

Some pundits have gone so far to say that England should build their squad around the 23-year-old.

Now, Winks feels that he owes his meteoric rise to Mauricio Pochettino.

“One of the best traits I think the gaffer has is that he brings the best out of a player,” Winks told inews.

“He wants us to get to the next level, he wants every player to be the best they can be. I suppose that’s the best quality you can have as a manager.”

Despite making just three appearances for the England senior squad so far and missing the World Cup through injury, Pochettino has lauded Winks – comparing him to Barcelona legends Xavi and Andrés Iniesta.

However, Winks isn’t letting the high praise get to his head.

“It’s nice to be compared to players of that calibre, of course, but I don’t take too much of that on board,” he says.

“I have to get to that level before I can be compared to them.

“It’s obviously lovely to hear that sort of comparison from the manager, but the most important thing is I need to improve as much as I can to get to that Xavi and Iniesta level.

“But to even be compared to them is a real honour.”

Winks and Tottenham play at Burnley in the early game on Saturday.
