After a week in which questions have been asked of manager Mauricio Pochettino and his squad following defeat at Leicester City and an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Colchester United, the 2-1 win over Southampton was just what Tottenham needed, says Harry Kane.

‘I think it was a massive win, and a massive statement to the fans and the club for the players to show how much they want to fight for this club,’ said the English captain. ‘We were going through a tough spell, but that is all you can do, dig deep and find ways to win.’

Spurs showed grit and determination to claim a 2-1 victory against the Saints, despite going down to ten men in the first half after Serge Aurier’s dismissal.

Kane’s goal two minutes before the break proved to be the match-winning strike.

‘Obviously we have had a couple of disappointing results recently, and going down to ten men was tough,’ added Kane. ‘Then when Southampton got their goal, we dug deep and got our goal before half time, and in the second half we worked hard and got that win.’

The game showed Tottenham’s character, said Kane.

‘It showed the character of the team. We’re going through a tough spell, but we put everything out on the pitch and I think we deserved the victory.’
