It’s here. It’s finally here. We’re just a week away until the World Cup, but what’s in store when Group C gets under way?
It looks more than likely that France will come top here. So if that’s the case, the opening game between Denmark and Peru could go a long way to deciding who finishes in second place. Australia look like being favourites for the wooden spoon here, having struggled to qualify, especially in their final play-off match against Syria.
Pione Sisto
One of the standout wingers in La Liga this season, Pione Sisto has emerged as one of the great hopes for Danish football since his move to Celta Vigo tow years ago. Quick, superb with the ball at his feet and an excellent crosser, this 23-year-old is set to shine in Russia.
Matthew Leckie
Arguably Australia’s most creative threat this summer, Leckie has been starring in the Bundesliga since 2011 and currently plays for Hertha BSC. Another quick, pacy winger who revels in beating opponents, this 27-year-old is right at the peak of his powers.
Edison Flores
He doesn’t quite have the reputation as Paolo Guerrero or Jefferson Farfan, but Edison Flores is absolutely essential to this Peru side. Playing as an attacking midfielder, this magnificent left-footer can earn a big money move to one of Europe’s leading clubs.
France. Any team other than France topping this group would be a massive shock and would begin rumblings of another 2010-esque revolt.
The other three teams in Group C came to the tournament via their respective confederations play-offs. Peru beating New Zealand, Denmark battering Republic of Ireland and Australia overcoming Syria. For us, it’s a toss up between the Danes and the South Americans – especially now Peru have been handed a lifeline with their captain Paolo Guerrero back from a drugs ban.
You’ve heard of champagne, right?
Australians are, well…Australian. The Danes would probably just be there in the background not causing a fuss. The Peruvians would more than likely arrive late but are definitely the last to leave. And the French? They’d offer a lot of promise but will probably crash out early because they couldn’t handle their drink.
