Gonzalo Higuaín has revealed how he once took criticism so much to heart that he isolated himself at home.

Throughout his career, the striker has been a target for boo boys.

Notorious performances such as his World Cup final display have seen him singled out.

As a result, it greatly impacted how he once lived his live off the field, as he told ESPN.

“I regretted closing myself in and staying at home instead of going out for fear of what people would tell me,” he said.

“There are people who do many bad things in life and go around without shame.

“We are sportsmen who haven’t killed anyone and try to do things well. Why can’t we go around happy?

“Even if you don’t go on social media, things find their way to you.

“I’m at a stage now where nothing hurts. I’m no longer affected by what others say. I’ve overcame that.”

The Argentine has had a disappointing spell on loan at Chelsea since January, scoring just three goals in 13 appearances for the club so far.
