The French centre-back, signed from Sevilla in the summer, was dismissed after catching Girona’s Pere Pons in the face with his elbow.

While VAR was consulted and a decision was made, some believe the challenge may have been accidental and Pons post-match admission may back that up.

The midfielder claimed after the game that he believed he had actually fouled Lenglet as the pair challenged for the ball.

“It was an incident that happened in the thick of things,” he said after the match which ended 2-2.

“I took a blow but when I got up, I apologised to Lenglet and shook his hand because a foul went against us and and I thought it was my fault at first.

“No-one was to blame and ultimately it was decided by a third party, the VAR. I didn’t even notice the contact with his elbow.”

Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Barcelona but, following the sending-off, Cristhian Stuani netted twice to give Girona the lead before Gerard Pique equalised.
