On Wednesday night in the inaugural Leagues Cup against Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo, Giovani dos Santos marked his Club América debut with the match-winning penalty to send his side to the semi-finals.
América will face Tigres on 20 August in a re-match of the Campeón de Campeones, a match Miguel Herrera’s side won on penalties to deny Tigres their fourth-straight title.
His 33 minutes on the pitch were the most he’s played in nearly a year and on Thursday, he took the time to thank everyone that was involved in his comeback.
“There have been very hard months of working in silence. I never let my guard down, nor lost the illusion of returning to the pitch.
“Today I am happy with my long-awaited debut with this shirt. I am thankful to God for without him, nothing would be possible.
“Thank you to the club, the coaching staff, my colleagues, and my family. ”
Dos Santos also revealed in an interview with TUDN that it was goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín that decided he would take the decisive spot kick in the seventh round of the shootout.
“He (Marchesín) let me shoot it. In the end, he told me he wanted me to win the game so I put it in and we go on to the next round.
“It’s been a long time since I felt those nerves and felt that motivated. The truth is that it was a pleasure to be able to play a few minutes with my teammates.
“I’m happy to be part of this group and this is the best way I could debut.”
Dos Santos is likely to make his Liga MX debut this Saturday when they face Club León in a re-match of last season’s Liguilla semi-finals.
