Undoubtedly, when América captured Giovani dos Santos over the summer, it was one of the biggest signings in Liga MX in recent years.

The former Barcelona man has shown glimpses of his brilliance but his first season in Mexico has been hampered by injuries, one of which was one of the most grotesque injuries football has ever seen.

The injury caused by Chivas defender Antonio Briseño made headlines all around the world, as dos Santos was left with an open wound in his leg.

Ahead of the semi-final first leg against Monarcas, dos Santos finally discussed the injury, but only briefly.

“It has been a few complicated months. When I was finally reaching my top level, I got hurt.

“These are things that happen in football. It’s in the past.”

The two sides will face off on Thursday before the return leg at the Azteca this Sunday.
