A huge number of Sunderland fans made the 300-mile trek to Gillingham on Saturday, only to see their side fall victim to defeat thanks to Connor Ogilvie’s 89th-minute winner.
Black Cats supporters let the team know exactly how they were feeling after the final whistle, chanting ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ following their seventh-straight match without tasting victory.
Following the match, Gillingham supporters applauded the away fans for their impressive efforts, and manager Steve Evans shared their enthusiasm.
“We were dominant against what I think is an outstanding football club and I was amazed how many supporters travelled with them,” Evans said after the match.
“The Gills fans applauded those who travelled and I joined in myself because I don’t see many travel in numbers like that in the away end here, forgetting that, I thought we dominated the play.
“I think it would be rather harsh if they didn’t go back and think Gillingham deserved to win.”
Sunderland are now in 11th place on 26 points through 18 games and will next host Blackpool on Saturday.
