Manchester United may be in a slump at the moment but that doesn’t mean they will be unable to attract top talent this summer, Gary Neville has insisted.

The former defender has been an outspoken critic in recent years of the way the club have gone about their business at boardroom level.

That said, he isn’t worried about their ability to continue bringing elite players to Old Trafford, given that it was also an issue during the glory years.

“I think United can still attract top-end players because we’ve seen good players come in the last six or seven years,” he said, quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“The club will never move away from being a sensational club, although it will have difficult moments and is having one now.

“But the club has lost out on players when it was successful to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

“There was [Arjen] Robben to Chelsea in the mid-2000s, [Samir] Nasri to City. Don’t think it didn’t happen when Alex Ferguson was here.

“It isn’t because of the current plight or the coach or the manager or the players. It just happens sometimes. It happened in successful times too.”

One man who has been linked with a summer move is Aaron Wan-Bissaka and while Neville believes it would be a good signing, is concerned about the cost involved.

“He’s a massive talent and the club, to be fair, have always signed young, emerging British talent,” added the Englishman.

“I don’t think that should change and it would seem to me that the club would like to go back down that route and he is one.

“The price is always going to be big because clubs are wise now to it so you can’t pinch players off clubs for £5m or £6m anymore.

“They have the Premier League funding of £100m so they don’t need to panic, they don’t need extra £5m or £10m and want £50m or £60m.”
