Joe Gomez was forced off 10 minutes into England’s friendly with the Netherlands after suffering an ankle injury while landing awkwardly from a tough aerial challenge.
The 20-year-old was visibly distraught and was replaced by Harry Maguire after lengthy treatment was not enough for Gomez to continue.
“We need to have a closer look,” England manager Gareth Southgate told BBC after the 1-0 win over the Netherlands.
“We didn’t like the way he landed, he was knocked in the air. We don’t know at the moment, we need to check that.”
Liverpool fans will be concerned over the long-term health of Gomez. The defender recently came back from a lengthy spell away due to an ACL injury.
Gomez has been mostly deployed at right-back this season, but Jürgen Klopp is expected to move him into the centre-back position in the near future.
Any further injury spell will cast severe doubt on Gomez’s inclusion in England’s World Cup roster.
