England boss Gareth Southgate has admitted that Harry Kane’s enforced injury break “won’t do him any harm”.

The Tottenham striker is set to miss the next six weeks of action after going down with ankle ligament damage during their game against Manchester United last weekend.

It means the goalscorer is likely to be out for key games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund but Southgate has hesitantly conceded that the break could be good for Kane in the long run.

“I’ve already had contact with him,” said Southgate, speaking at a Football Writers’ Association Gala Tribute Dinner in his honour on Sunday.

“I’m due to speak with him this week as well.

“It is a disappointment for any player to miss any matches and Harry especially wants to be available for every game and having the opportunity to score in every game.

“But knowing his mindset, there will be a calendar on the wall and he will be making sure he is back ahead of where people are predicting. The break won’t do him any harm.”

Without their star striker Spurs scraped past Fulham on Sunday, needing a late Harry Winks goal to beat the Cottagers 2-1.
