Frank Lampard is set to drop captain Cesar Azpilicueta from the Chelsea starting XI once Reece James recovers from ankle surgery.

James starred on loan at Wigan last season where he was named in the Championship Team of the Season.

But his progress was curtailed over the summer after picking up a bad ankle injury before England’s Under-21 European Championship campaign.

The 19-year-old is still in recovery but a story in the London Evening Standard has claimed that he will go straight into the Blues first team once fit.

Azpilicueta hasn’t missed a minute of the season so far but has come in for criticism after playing a damning role in their shock draw at home to Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Spain international was handed the captaincy by Maurizio Sarri and has kept that role under Lampard.
