Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is the favourite to take the vacant manager’s job at Stamford Bridge.

The former midfielder has spent one year in management with Derby County, who he led to the Championship play-off final last season.

Those performances were seemingly enough to convince Chelsea they should take a punt on him. The club’s all-time top goalscorer is the clear frontrunner to replace Maurizio Sarri after the Italian left for Juventus.

But Derby won’t give Lampard up without a fight.

According to the Mirror, the Rams have offered the 41-year-old a new four-year £2.5m-a-year contract in a last ditch attempt to keep him at the club.

“Of course we have made it very clear to everyone, but most importantly to Frank, that we want to retain him for the long-term,” Derby owner Mel Morris said recently.

“In the meantime we will continue to put our best foot forward to continue with our plans for the coming season and work with Frank for him to know how much he is wanted by everyone associated with the club.”

Lampard remains the strong favourite for the Chelsea job and is expected to announce a decision when he returns from a summer break.
